Acupuncture

The practice of acupuncture began in ancient China and has now developed into a modern method of natural healing and pain relief. It is used by Physiotherapists for treatment of acute and chronic pain, muscle spasm, inflammation and headaches. Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles through the skin and tissues at specific places on the body called acupuncture points. The needles are sterile and only used once; after which they are discarded. The needles may be stimulated by hand or with electrical stimulation. Acupuncture works by stimulating the body’s neuroendocrine system to produce its own natural pain relieving chemicals called “ENDORPHINS”. Endorphins bind to receptors in the nervous system, and help block pain pathways from the body to the brain, resulting in pain relief, relaxation, and restoration of the body’s own regulation systems.

Family Physiotherapy Clinic offers acupuncture services to our patients either on its own or as a part of a larger therapeutic plan. This in combination with our full range of physiotherapy services offers our patients a wide range of options based on their comfort level and their needs. Physiotherapists Sandra Thompson and Joanne Gross are Acupuncture-certified with Acupuncture Canada (previously Acupuncture Foundation of Canada).
